Mosquito Facts

Mosquito History

  • Mosquitoes were around in the Jurassic era when dinosaurs ran free and they are still just as strong today.
  • Scientists believe that mosquitoes originated in South Africa and eventually spread to the rest of the world.
  • Mosquitoes have evolved to the point where there are approximately 2,700 different species of mosquitoes.
  • Ancient mosquitoes were up to three times larger than today’s mosquitoes.
  • The word mosquito actually means “biting fly.”

Mosquito Feeding

  • Mosquitoes are more attracted to women than to men.
  • If given the choice, mosquitoes would usually rather drink blood from a blonde.
  • Mosquitoes like to aim for moving targets.
  • Many mosquitoes target people in dark clothing.
  • When female mosquitoes drink blood, they purify the blood in their systems and leave a small puddle of urine on their victim’s skin. That is why when you first get bit, you may notice a small wet spot surrounding the bite.
  • On average, female mosquitoes drink from 0.001 to 0.1 millimeters of blood per feeding.
  • Mosquitoes are more prone to attacking people and animals during a full moon.

Diseases Within The United States Spread by Mosquitoes

  • West Nile Virus
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis
  • La Crosse Encephalitis
  • St. Louis Encephalitis
  • Western Equine Encephalitis
  • Heartworm

MAC’S MOSQUITO CONTROL PHILOSOPHY, POLICY AND PROCEDURES:

Because mosquitoes only become a nuisance during the summer months, is why we restrict our control program to this time of year which typically falls between April and October, although, some years can and will vary from that. Therefore, Mac’s will start and stop this program as we see fit according to mother nature on a year to year basis for customers already signed up for this control policy, unless they specifically notify us to do otherwise. Customers signing up for this control policy after we have started our regular summer treatments will only pay for services rendered and can expect Mac’s to stop their summer treatments in the same month as the majority of other mosquito control customers unless they specifically instruct us to do otherwise.

Because mosquitoes only swarm during their daily activities no more than about 15 feet off the ground, we apply both adulticides and larvacides from a misting machine to your property approximately 30 days apart during these summer months. This application resides on the leaf surfaces of all your trees, shrubs, grass, etc., up to 15 feet off the ground. As mosquitoes land on these surfaces to rest during their active time they are killed and/or effected to the point of not being able to reproduce. Other treatments such as neutralizing stagnant water (breeding grounds) within your treatment zone is performed as well when needed. The misting procedure, however, is the heart and soul of our control efforts. This treatment is more effective if done on a sunny day with little to no chance of rain, and very little wind. These conditions allow for a higher rate of effectiveness. That is why Mac’s is poised with special equipment, trucks and trained personnel ready to execute these treatments at a moment’s notice, which we do between the 15th and 30th of each of the summer months in our mosquito season. Rarely would there be at least one or two days during a 15 day stretch where we wouldn’t have good conditions to execute these treatments.

Since all of these treatments are outside there is no need to schedule with the customer on a particular day. We will, however, leave a door hanger or yard sign on the property so that you know we have been there. If, however, the technician shows up and the customer is having an outdoor event not conducive to treatment, then we will withdraw and make special arrangements for treatment as soon thereafter as possible. This procedure is the best way to ensure the best control results and you as the customer should experience a tremendously less number of mosquito bites, or none at all, during your outdoor activities than if we were not treating as described above.

However, because this is mosquito control and not elimination, and because local natural environment mosquito population can vary from year to year, you could still experience some bites during this program. What this means, is Mac’s cannot retreat for any one month on the basis of a customer’s opinion of results and environmental laws may restrict us from performing such treatments at any particular location more than one time per month. However, if a customer ever feels like a technician did something they shouldn’t have done or did not do something they should have done that could have resulted in a less effective treatment, then upon consideration from Mac’s management, re-treatment at no additional cost to the customer may be performed.
